Word Of The Year 2023 – part 2

Last week we posted part 1 of our traditional mini-series, Word Of The Year. After 2019’s“climate emergency”, 2020’s “pandemic”, 2021’s “vax”, and 2022’s “Goblin mode”, at the end of 2023, the Word Of The Year was announced by Dictionary dot com: “hallucinate”.

In the context of artificial intelligence, it’s a verb that means “to produce false information contrary to the intent of the user and present it as if true and factual.” As Harmeet Kaur writes for CNN, it’s what happens when “chatbots and other A.I. tools confidently make stuff up.”

In part 2 of this mini-series, we are presenting another Word Of The Year.

Oxford’s winner for 2023 is “rizz”.

It’s a shortened version of “charisma” that appeared on the radar in 2022 and became super popular last year.

With Oxford’s lexicologists, we are digging deep:
– history of the winner,

– other words that made the shortlist,

– interesting other finalists,

– and even monthly diagrams on the winner’s usage.
