Learn and Play

Mastering a language takes discipline and hard word. No doubt about that. But there is a proverb that says “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” From a mental and physiological point of view I would translate it like this: ...

If you think of learning a language like using certain “mental muscles”, you realize that it is as true for mental muscles as it is for the muscles of your body, that you cannot make those muscles work without giving them a break from time to time. If there is a task that requires 24 hours of physical work, the fastest and best guaranteed result will not come from working 24 hours without a break but from doing some work and then giving yourself some time for rest and recreation, so that those muscles can work the most reliably and effectively.

Approaching learning in a playful way is, as the brutal proverb says “killing two birds with one stone”. I would choose to keep both birds alive if possible . The point is that by finding playful ways to learn you can acquire new knowledge and get energized at the same time.

Our recent research target was to find a bunch of great games: board games, apps and online games that help you learn and practise in a playful way.

The result is a collection 35 games with descriptions, tips and links for more information, downloading and purchasing options.
