Word Of The Year 2021 – part 1

Two years ago Word Of The Year for 2019 was announced: “climate emergency”. Little did we know that by March 2020, its use would decline by 50% as the word “pandemic” was becoming more and more frequently used in our everyday vocabulary...

In just one year, its use increased by 57,000%. Unthinkable. Just like the underlying state of the world.
Also hard to believe but true: the word “coronavirus” became one of the most commonly used nouns in English, so frequently used that it overtook the word “time” in English.

And then came 2021.

Word of the year? Linguists say it was a no-brainer. A word that had been around since the ’80s suddenly surged, appearing more than 70 times more frequently than a year before.
